ABC Family: Where 90’s Teen Stars Go To Die (Or Is It?)

Admittedly, we are nerds for the shows of our youth and all things twenty years ago. Blossom? Hell yes. Clarissa Explains It All? Bring it. So we’re sort of secretly excited and sort of sad about the new show on ABC Family called Melissa & Joey. Excited because it brings some of our childhood idols back to the small screen, but sad because a) Joey Lawrence needs an eyebrow intervention and b) the premise of the show just sounds sort of stupid.

Joey plays Melissa Joan Hart’s “manny” who helps care for her niece and nephew. The manny premise could only be made worse if he’s a self-described metrosexual who really enjoys staycations and has a fetish for cougars. Buzzwords aside though, it seems like bringing old stars back into the fray is the new thing to do. Look at Hot In Cleveland - sure, it has the Betty White magic touch, but it’s the perfect example of a comeback ensemble.

If nothing else, at least Melissa & Joey will not involve real housewives or pie-eating contests (we’re looking at you, last night’s Bachelor Pad), and that’s kind of refreshing. Let’s just hope they don’t rely too heavily on Joey’s “Whoa!” catchphrase making its comeback.
